The peaceful student demostration of October 23, 1956, is seen passing across the Margaret Bridge to Bem József tér on the Buda side of the Danube. This was how the revolution began. In the foreground of the photograph, the bespectacled man standing next to the girl in a white blouse is author Miklós Vajda, long-time editor of the Hungarian Quaterly. Standing with his back facing the camera is literary historian Pál Réz. Behind Miklós Vajda and dressed in a dark coat with a cockade is 19-year-old reporter Mátyás Sárközi, the author of this piece.
